Fri 22 Mar 2013

It’s now official – a new University Campus for the new city. Details of University Campus Milton Keynes (UCMK), the ground-breaking partnership between the University of Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes Council, were unveiled today.

At a joint media briefing, Bill Rammell University Vice Chancellor and Cllr Andrew Geary, Leader of Milton Keynes Council, formally launched:

•           Full list of courses for 2013/14;
•           Brand new UCMK Logo & Branding;
•           Proposed UCMK Governance Structure;
UCMK Board (a dedicated sub-committee of the UoB Board of Governors) will have primary responsibility for UCMK governance. Membership will include ‘new’ MK representation, UoB Governors’ MK representatives and other UoB Governors. In addition there will be a UCMK Advisory Group, a de facto successor to the MK Higher Education Board.
•           And confirmed Campus Location – Saxon Court.

The first students will begin at UCMK in September. In line with the city’s ambitions and global outlook, the first cohort will be a mix of local, UK and international students, both full and part-time. Provision will include foundation courses, undergraduate degrees, pre-masters courses and post-graduate degrees (including doctorates).

UCMK will be an integral division of the University of Bedfordshire as a prominent regional University. It is backed by Milton Keynes Council and there will be significant local representation on its primary governing body.  The University of Bedfordshire, through UCMK, is already working with key regional businesses, the Council and The OU on a bid for significant Higher Education Funding Council for England ‘Catalyst’ funding to support sustainable growth in Milton Keynes.
At the outset the core academic programme will focus on Engineering & Technology. There will also be undergraduate degrees in Journalism, Psychology and Criminology (A full list of courses is supplied). The first students to progress from MK College have already registered.

Bill Rammell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, says:

“This is an exciting new chapter for both the University of Bedfordshire and for Milton Keynes. University Campus Milton Keynes – UCMK – delivers on long-held local ambitions, but is also national and international in its scope.

“We will soon begin the move into Saxon Court and each University of Bedfordshire faculty and department will be represented. It is a quality, flexible, face to face higher education offer, alongside continuous professional development opportunities for employees and employers.

“UCMK will be home and international; student and employer; and teaching and research.”

Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Cllr Andrew Geary said: “University Campus Milton Keynes will bring a major boost to the city. It has been a long term ambition to offer face to face degree-level teaching to our growing communities, without the need for people to travel elsewhere. UCMK will help us ‘home grow’ this next generation skilled workforce, focusing on the skills needed by businesses moving to and growing in Milton Keynes, which in turn creates the right jobs for new graduates.

“As well as ‘homegrown talent’ we also want to attract international students, which is also good news for the local economy as it will help to put Milton Keynes on the global map.”

Professor David Barrett, the University’s Dean of Partnerships and Interim Dean of UCMK says:

“UCMK is the product of a close constructive relationship between the University of Bedfordshire and MK Council. It is a relationship that will go from strength to strength as UCMK grows in student numbers, academic offer and in regional impact and influence.”
